Mini Interview
My first homebrew... My first home brew was an octoberfest style lager from a beer kit, it turned out pretty good, a bit too malty for my taste but not bad for a start.
Homebrewing Story... Well... my second home brew. an attempt at a pale ale, did not turn out so well. I had already made the wort, cooled it and had it in the fermenter. However the yeast spilled on the floor thanks to my golden retriever who seemed mighty pleased with himself. So I had 5 gallons of beer ready to ferment and no yeast with which to ferment it... Or so I thought until I stumbled across some bread yeast. So I used the bread yeast, it fermented the wort into what looked like beer, and I suppose depending on your definition of beer smelled and tasted like it too. If indeed you think beer should taste extremely fruity like grapefuit, apples, and even a tinge of butterscotch. Needless to say I learned my lesson about the importance of the right yeast to use, and since then have made sure I had back up yeast ready just in case.

Why I homebrew... Well as a biologist the science itself is interesting to me. The process is fun and the end product is extremely gratifying (when done right). Also I can drink a high quality home brew without paying $9+ per six pack. it comes down to less than half that for beer that's on par if not better than any commercial brew you can find.
