Follow on from the journal entry dated Feb 21st 2007.

This has proven to be a rather enjoyable draught. According to SUDS the SRM is 17.5 with IBU of
28.9 and ABV at 3.9% for a five Imperial gallon brew. Extraction was around 71%.
A delightful medium chestnut colour, medium mouthfeel and well matched bitterness together with a lovely hop flavour to finish.

Well It's My Nephews Birthday so thought I'd brew something up for the occassion.

8 pounds Golden Promise Pale Malt
4 ounces Chocolate Malt
2 ounces Black Malt
1 ounce Roast Barley
3 ounces Crystal Malt
2 ounces Flaked Barley
1 pack Nottingham Yeast
3.5 gallons (uk) at 72C strike heat
3 hour mash
sparged with 2 gallons at 72C
1 ounce Mount Hood 3.2% alpha 60 minute boil
.75 ounce Challenger 8% aplha 60 minute boil
.5 ounce Mount Hood 3.2% alpha 15 minutes before end of 60 minute boil
.5 ounce Mount Hood 3.2% alpha once heat removed
Hops sparged with 4 pints of cool water approx 18C

The wort prior to boiling was so lush it was drinkable just as a health drink.
I haven't tasted it after boiling with the hops but calculations say it should be somewhere in
the range of 2.4 alpha acid units per gallon which I hope isn't a tad too bitter.

Look forward to tasting some from a corny keg in about 2-3 weeks time.
Will be naturally carbonated by kegging at around 1.015-1.018

Until then I'll busy Myself with the latest episodes of LOST.

Cheers

Well a dear old mate died at the beginning of November 2006 (hypothermia, dehydration and kidney failure)and so I had to brew something quickly for His wake. Only used a bargain basement kit which cost 5 quid. As I had no time to do a grain mash. This was as You would expect it to taste CHEAP... But a day or so later I used one of Dave Lines recipes for Zwiets Tatra which I put in the shed for nearly 3 months. This was much better and tasted great down to the last pint. It was batch sparged and I got around 60% extraction so had to use slightly more Golden Syrup. Goldings were used as I had no Saaz or Hallertua and English two row (Marris Otter). Went down a treat and will probably make it again. God Bless You Rob I miss our sessions already.
