So, I just ordered two pounds of hops from ATonOfHops.

It was for:

1 lb of Amarillo
1 lb of Simcoe

Cost was $29.25, plus $10.70 for shipping. Total Cost is $39.95.

The order went in at 3:24pm EST on Tuesday, August 31st.

I just received a PayPal confirmation at 3:27pm. I will keep everyone posted with my experiences.

My friend and I just picked 2 lbs of chinook hops off of his plant the other day. It's only their second year growing and they produced like crazy! We took the chance of eating a few of the petals off of the cones, and WOW, they really packed a bitterness punch. Have a very spicy characteristic as well. The best part was washing it down with some homebrew IPA, which REALLY brought the flavors out from eating the petals/bracts.

Just got notification from TonTon that the package will ship USPS tomorrow AM.

Also, I asked about a few different varieties that TonTon said he could get, bit he wanted to see if others were interested in them. The varieties I asked about were Warrior, Palisade, and Summit. Would any of you all be interested in TonTon getting them. I know it would make things easier for me if I only needed to order from one vendor (less shipping and a reputable source).

It's now the 2nd and USPS is still saying they haven't received the package. I also just received another tracking number from A Ton of Hops. PayPal reflects two tracking numbers as well now. I emailed them to find out what is going on, but haven't heard anything yet. I was expecting these hops for this weekends brew. I hope they still make it in time.

Just found out from TonTon's wife that USPS picked it up on Tuesday, but USPS had an issue with A Ton of Hops' mail/tracking label. USPS brought it back to them today to get a new label put on. Hops didn't get out in time for my brew day, which means I either have to change beers or cancel until the hops are here.

I was really looking forward to doing my IIPA....

Just got an update for TonTon himself. Now this is why I will continue to go to him.

"You know Murphy's Law "whatever can go wrong will go wrong".

Our commitment is to customers like you. Our little business' success depends on people like you. No matter if it is a one pound order, or a fifty pound order, every one counts to me. It does irk me when things out of my control mess with you guys, but I can't hand deliver all of the orders. My day job is Automation Engineering (I'm a mechanical engineer), and the first rule in automation is "never let go of whatever you are handling until it's a finished product". Well, in an internet business like ours, I have to let go of the product and give it to a somewhat unreliable delivery service (not that any other service is better). In automation, I'd toss out the entire design of a faulty delivery system, and design a solid solution. However in this case, I can't and that drives me crazy.

Let's hope your order gets to you by Saturday morning. Again, I apologize for the delay and I hope it doesn't leave too bad a taste in your mouth about us.

Thanks for your business, and have a great brew day.

Cheers,

Bill Sauerhoefer (tonton)

A Ton Of Hops"

This personal service is why I will continue to go back. Whether it's for a pound of hops, or fifty.

Summit Hops?

Rhizomes in the spring?

Hop / grain print Hawaiian style shirts?

Also If I were to order something that is out of stock and delayed, does that delay my entire order or just that item? The way I see it, I'm ordering bulk so its not like I'd be planning to brew 3 days after....

Summit Hops?- ATH- Maybe in the near future if I can get rid of the lame varieties

Rhizomes in the spring?-ATH- I will be ordering 300 Rhizomes in January. What varieties do you guys want?

Hop / grain print Hawaiian style shirts?-ATH- I was thinking more along the lines of printed t's with ATH logo on them.?.

Also If I were to order something that is out of stock and delayed, does that delay my entire order or just that item? The way I see it, I'm ordering bulk so its not like I'd be planning to brew 3 days after....-ATH-It would not delay your entire order, but if you want things that are out of stock be prepared to buy at least 6 lbs of that variety that you want. I've gotten stuck with a lot of hops (Bullion) that I can't sell so I will buy the absolute minimum I can order (11 lbs). If that suits you, then I'll get them in. It takes about a week or so for them to get to me, so plan on at least a 10 to 12 day turn around.

Free Samples to BrewBoy?-ATH- We usually drop free samples into orders of 5+lbs. But if you are really nice to me, I could send you something extra with your next order under 5lb

Sorry about the Palisade. Maybe you should run specials from time to time. Might help this orders come in.

reddskinnfan -

Unfortunately whatever we put up on the site will have to sell within a relatively decent amount of time. I would much rather have a variety that sells 11 lbs within a couple of months than have something that sells that same amount in a years time. I can't invest in any more varieties that are just taking up space in the freezer (and dwindling my available cashflow). However, if you or I can find enough interest in these varieties, then I would be happy to keep stock in them.

Summit might be of some interest, but I need to know for sure before I buy a large quantity. I have a lot of Palisades, Cluster, Warriror, and Bullion in stock due to suggestions that they would sell. The Bullion I am taking a total loss on, and Cluster is right behind it. The bus is still out on Palisades and Warrior, however I worry these will suffer the same fate. Only time will tell.

As for this exact moment in time, we are just about done depleting our 2009 stock and have been getting in brand, spankin' new 2010's, so our cashflow for new varieties is somewhat nonexistent (for now). I hope that next year turns out better than last for us so we can do a little bit more on the in stock varieties. I am very hopeful.

I do want to thank all of you here at TB again for your input and biz. Without you guys, we may not have grown as well as we have. Just so you guys realise... Our business started last spring with only one variety; Cascade. Since then we have started a website, expanded our in stock hops to 18 varieties (prior to needing to purge '09's), and also added combo packs.

Please let your fellow homebrewers and even you LHBS and brewpubs know about us. Believe me when I say it, that the more business that you all here generate, the greater buying power we will have, and the the prices for you will most definately go lower!

That said, I will also remind you that there are discounts available for homebrewers if you want to put together a "group buy" of 20 or more pounds. This is also true for 11 lb increments of any one type of hop.

Cheers to you all here, and thanks again for the support. Hopefully one day we will actually turn a small profit and get some of our best customers together for a pubcrawl out here in the east coast microbrew capital, Lancaster PA.
