I have just placed an order for 8 pounds of hops at atonofhops.com.
I will use this thread to keep everyone updated on the exact progress of the order including prices, quality and time.
Below are costs per ounce and varieties the varieties I bought. Shipping for 8 pounds was $14.50 which from my personal shipping experience seems to be a very fair price
Chinook - 82 cents
Hallertau - 86 cents
Simcoe - 114 cents
Magnum - 86 cents
Columbus - 72 cents
Centennial - 99 cents
Amarillo - 91 cents
Saaz - 89 cents
Shipping came out to be almost 12 cents per ounce
The order was placed August 27 at 10:57 PST
Next post should be when or if I receive tracking information followed by arrival and quality of hops
Cheers
Oliver

Don't worry---I have bought a couple of pounds of hops from them before and everything turned out great. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

And from what tonton posted the other day, you could have ordered 4 more pounds and your shipping would have remained the same.

OlliG - Thanks for the order! We are all excited here at atonofhops to follow your review of the store. We really do enjoy getting feedback from our customers, and this is a great way for everyone here at tastybrew to get a little bit of insight on our products and service.
hts - Thanks for the good review.
BTW, we just added a combo pack option on the site. This may be a good option for those of you who don't want to buy a full pound of one type of hop. Now you can pick up to four different varieties (4 oz of each) for one price.
Cheers!

August 30 12:49 PST: Package out for delivery.
Considering atonofhops is based on the east coast, I cannot complain at all about the shipping time. Don't think faster is possible.
Tonight, I will check out the quality of the hops.

Opened my box today
Chinook and Hallertau Hops were not sealed probably which was slightly disappointing because Hallertau is my favorite hops.
The other 6 packages were packed up perfectly and the hops smells fresh. I am hoping the Hallertau and Chinook were originally also packed up properly. As a suggestion to atonofhops I would say it might be beneficial to put packing paper in between individual packages of hops to avoid friction.
The weight on the individual bags was mostly very acurate, however I found one bag that was short half an ounce. Considering that the majority of them had 0.1 ounces extra it averages out to be a bit of more than I ordered.
Definitely was very happy about the personal message on the invoice and the 3 oz present of Willamette that was added for free to the order.
All in all I am going to have to take of 1 star because of the two packages that were not vacuum sealed. However, atonofhops also has a much more personal feel that I very much value especially with my homebrewing needs.
Overall: 4 stars
Conclusions: I think I am going to buy from atonofhops again. Especially with their new 4oz sampler product. The feeling I get from this company is that they really care about brewing and about providing quality service and I think with the help of the homebrewing community and our continued suggestions for improvements there is a lot of potential here.

OlliG- Thank you again for your order and for the very informative review of your experience with us. I apologize for the seal integrity on the Chinook and Hallertau vacuum bags, however I can guarantee that they were sealed correctly when they were packaged because I personally packed your order. I will in the future look into packing materials that will aid in securing the individual packages inside the box. Unfortunatley, we have yet to find a vacuum sealer / bag combo that holds it's integrity 100% of the time during shipping and storage. We see this now and again with sealed bags in our freezer too. The bags we are currently using are better than the previous ones, but still leave a bit to be desired (as with your experience).
Seal integrity is also a problem for the farms we deal with. I have bought from Hop Union, Hopsteiner, and other large companies that vaccum seal thier packages proir to shipping , and not one of them has gotten a package to me with the seal intact even 50% of the time. That said, it does not excuse me of the responsibility of getting your product to you as stated on our website "One pound vacuum sealed package of T90 pellets". Please let us know if there is anything we can do for you to rectify this.
Again, thanks for the review, and I hope to see you again as a return customer.
Cheers,

brewboy BB- LMAO! Not yet, but I would look forward to it happening. Our largest order to date was 88 lbs.
Wow, it would take 125 large flat rate boxes to ship that! Guess I'd have to look into freight shipping.

I am also confident that you guys will rise to be an important supplier to homebrewers. I certainly am very happy with what you guys have achieved and I am looking forward to following your company.
And yeah, I will be a return customer.

So here's one of my questions. How long will the hops keep after opened? I can't re-vacuum seal them but can roll the package back up, put in a ziploc bag, and back in the freezer. I ask because I want to make a hop bomb ipa that will take over $30 in hops from the lhbs at $2.50 per oz. If I buy from a ton of hops I can get all that and have a lot left to use down the road - but don't want to lose the good stuff...

I've found that if you at least do your best to take as much oxygen out of a ziplock and store them in a freezer, that they will last a very long time (up to 2 years losing about 30% alpha in that time).

Where are you located, and if I make an order now when will it ship today? I am in Maryland, the ZIP is 20874.

Lancaster, I think.
Tonton, if my brewclub (from CT) decides to do a pub crawl in your area, could we stop in for a visit? Or at the very least, to pickup an order?

reddskinnfan- We are located in Lancaster, PA. If you order today they will be in the mail in the morning. Most likeley be there by Friday (2-3 day delivery).
BryansBrew- You are only allowed to do a pub crawl in the area if you invite me.
If you want to stop in, that would be fine, however if you are on a pub crawl the best place to stop in is the Union Barrel Works in Reamstown. It just so happens that I am only a couple of miles away from there, and I would even meet you there with your hops (if you ordered). Our business is currently ran out of our home, but like I said, if you want to stop by I'm cool with it.

reddskinnfan- I just answered your inquiry on the site. If you would like to pick them up, by all means we will oblige. It would save you $10.70 and we could give you directions (or go with you) to Stoudts Brewery, Victory Brewing Co., Lancaster Brewing Co., Springhouse Brewing, Union Barrel Works (brewpub), Jo-Boys (brewpub), etc. We are conveniently located within 30 minutes of most, within 5 minutes of Stoudts and UBW.

The question that I asked TonTon (if anyone is interested) on his site was about the possibility of him stocking Warrior, Palisade, and Summit hops. They are all varieties that I use regularly, and absurd some of you do too. If TonTon sees an interest in them, he will stock them.
Anyone interested?

Sounds good, tonton. We proposed 4 places for our trip next year, but I think the mid-atlantic trip will probably win out since I'm sure a lot of people will have a time/money issue with going to the PNW.
We'll keep you in the loop. I doubt planning will start for a few months. We definitely want to hit Philly again. Maybe go all the way to DFH. Victory. etc...

Tonton,
Are you able to get any of the NZ varietes? I'm only looking for maybe an ounce or 2 of several different kinds to expiriment with and if I like them would buy more. I'm not able to find anyone online that sells what I haven't already tried. Looking for any/all of the following:
Motueka
Riwaka
Pacifica
NZ Cascade
Hallertau Aroma
Green Bullet
Pacific Jade
Southern Cross
Super Alpha

Do you think that the integrity of the vacuum seal could be from residual hop resin?
Maybe when the hops are put into the bag, some hop resin is deposited where the seal would be,
and it creates a blemish in the seal...
This would account for both hop companies having pesky bag issues.
I don't know, just a thought.
