Well since you're from Simcoe, Canada lets call them Simcoe hops....but they're probably Red Vine.
Free hops are free hops, right?....or do I say "eh"?

Yeah, Aidan, take the word of someone from an online forum, whom you've likely never met, and dump your girlfriend.

Any girl that can spot the wild hops for you is a keeper.. Next thing you'll be driving through the country and she'll spot an independent maltster.

Brewkid, If they're feral hops left over from some pre-prohibition hop farm (or from someone who was growing them during prohibition for homebrewing), they're probably Fuggles. I've seen a few of these plants in Upstate NY that somehow survived the hop blight.

Very tough to know the alpha acid levels of things like these, and you'll probably want to make a beer with your sweetie using them since she found them (just a suggestion--been married 19 years, there's a little strategy here). You'll probably be fine if you half fill up a hop sock with them and use them as a finish hop, along with about 1/3 to 1/2 of whatever you usually finish with. I'd worry about infecting beer with them, so I probably wouldn't dry hop unless I boiled them in water beforehand.

Tom, I've been married a lot longer than you, but if I say to my wife, "We should go make some beer", she'll ask me if I have a rat in my pocket. She likes my beer, in fact, we try and stop and many brewpubs when we travel and a lot times she tells me that she prefers mine. However, she has absolutely no interest in brewing and wonders how I can spend so much time doing it.

Brewboy-- My wife has very low interest in actually making beer too. What's good is that appreciates the beer and understands the process. I think you and I may have both succeeded in that camp.

I never hear any complaints regards to sticky floors, trips to breweries brewpubs and hop farms, bjcp judging, lots of big pots, hoses and kegs left drying around the house, a kegerator in the dining room, family members sleeping on the couch, time and money I spend, etc.

Conversely, I am very happy to hear complaints from her that I give away too much beer to family and neighbors, or that we're running low and I better make a batch because there's some empty cornies that should get filled.

Hmm....my wife just likes to give away my beer. She used to help with brewing and bottling..then it dropped off to just bottling...now I do it all myself. However, she's still supportive and doesn't say anything about the equipment in the garage, the fermentation chiller I built, etc. She likes going to brewpubs and is my designated driver whenever we go out. I guess it goes to show you that there are many different types of relationships.

PS: I think she's happy that I went AG - now I do all my brewing in the garage.

My wife was happy when I moved from the kitchen to the deck. She was ecstatic when I built a brewroom FAR from the house.

Having to laugh with you other married guys! as long as I keep a keg filled with her favorite beer it's all good. No complaints from my wife and like brewboy my wife says she prefers mine to what we can get in the stores and most restaurants...

As long as your girl appreciates it all Aidan... Keep her!
