Harvest News
Our 2010 hop crop is looking to be an average to lighter crop due to an unusually cool and wet spring. The changes in our weather patterns have also delayed the crop somewhat ......... therefore, we look to begin picking hops near the end of August. Cooler spring temps can be an indicator of lower alpha levels in the crop but until we get samples back from the state lab, it is just too early to tell. On the flip side, it is a clean crop; the mites and mildew seem to be under control at this point so we should have good quality hops to work with. That's how we see it...here on the farm. If you are ordering this year you may expect a slight delay due to harvest and our picking schedule being pushed back farther than normal.

Q & A
Question: Will you have any new hop varieties this year? How about Citra hops?
Answer: Yes, we will be offering all of our normal hop varieties as well as some newer ones like Citra and Sterling. These hops will be availale about mid-September and will be sold on a first-come-first-serve basis. We will also have both hop varieties in pellet form, however, pellets won't be available till about mid October.

Hop Vine Season Begins
Here at Putebaugh Farms we are offering fresh cut hop vines directly from the farm. Our season typically runs from August 30th to the 20th of September. The vines measure anywhere from 16 to 18 feet in length and weigh about 25 pounds each. We can also cut the vines to meet requests. At this time vines will be sold at $35.00 per vine. Please contact Hops Direct with only serious inquires.
The first paragraph looks like the typical "get ready for a price increase" tactic. What else is new?

Yeah, this is the same guy that told me a year ago that he'd let his hops rot on the vine for anything under $12/lb.

It's all a big game to artificially inflate the prices.

The whole '07 thing really messed me up. Now I think I have to have 20lbs in the freezer or I panic. Bastards got me. I'm like my grandparents, I'm saving everything now.

Tonton, love it.
Heading to my parents in Sunnyside (3 miles from Mabton and Putebaugh farm) on Tuesday, tempted to do a run by there and the other farms to "see" for myself....
Big trip for me since I am in. Texas now.
Will just stock up via tonton.

"It's all a big game to artificially inflate the prices. "
It's actually legit about the weather and harvest getting pushed back.
This region started off great but now we are hitting the 30's at night and that is gonna screw things up(leaves turning early and cones not getting fully mature).
Now with the delay in ordering is a result of harvest being pushed back into apple season and the hop fields already lose a bunch of immigrants to the apple crop, leaving them short-handed and that's when I jump in and work the fields....best time every time.

I think they should have a hard time bumping the prices when there's been over 25% growth in hop producing acreage in the U.S. over the past 2 years. WApilot is right about the weather here. Summer came late.

I've heard about and have seen evidence of the possibility of lower alpha acid contents in this years' crop. I also agree with PaulieR that the acreage has grown considerably. This leads me to believe that prices would most likely go lower, not higher. Now, don't quote me on this, it's just my opinion.
