Tried the legendary 3 eye ale for my first all grain batch and it turned good I guess. Shooting for 1070 and got 1064 so I think that was pretty good. Checked gravity today after a week and it was 1014. Any tricks for me being new to all grain brewing would be great.

When mashing its better to get the temp to high and lower with some water or ice and stir. Don't over do the ice 1-2 cubes at a time.

Stir a lot, and check the pH often. After you add water or grain, check the pH then, and again 10 mins. later.

Learn to calculate for efficiency so that you can modify your process to improve or maintain it. If you were shooting for 1.070 and you got 1.064 did you have a specific efficiency percentage in mind that you were trying to achieve? How much and what type of grain were you mashing? What was the volume of wort that you got the 1.064 reading from?

I had about 6.5 gallons. I used 10 lbs British 2 row, .5lb carapils, 1lb munich light, .5lb crystal 40, and .5lb soft white wheat.

Congrats on making it through your first brewing....

The lower gravity could come from several areas: grain crush, mash temp, system issues To increase your eff, you can request your grain to be double crushed at the LHBS.

Mash temps can help with your FG readings. Mash too high @ 158 and you probably won't get your FG down as low as you want. Mash @ 149 and your FG can be lower than expected. I think your doing well at your last reading of 1.014. AZBrewman gave god advice on the water/ice. 1-2 cubes at a time.

Equipment, I'd say it's too early to change too much up just yet. I suggest running a couple more batches and then start tweaking the gear/process. But building new gear is fun and rewarding so if you must change anything, change something you can use going forward.

Now that your 1 week into your ferment, plan your next batch and prepare to brew it as soon as the fermenter is cleared. The practice will help as will the repetition. Besides by the time this is ready to drink (assuming bottle conditioning) your next batch will be ready 2 weeks later.... That way you don't miss a beat.

One suggestion I like to give new brewers is to repeat the recipe a second time... your results may vary or be the same. If it improves I'd chock this up to process and experience. There are a lot of nice recipes out there.

Lastly, post often, ask lots of questions and be forewarned of the jokes and funny comments that get posted. (sort of like this one NOT!)
