Have any of my TastyBrew brothers and sisters purchased from Hops Direct (hopsdirect.com)? If so, did you get quality product and how were their shipping prices?
They have great prices on the website, so I'd like to take advantage, if they have quality product and the shipping is reasonable.

+1.060 to Hops Direct. I have ordered quite a bit from them as of late. Never order any leaf just the pellets.
Cascade pellets @ $8.75 / lb....Galena @ 9.75!!!! Awesome deals. These might be last years but they smell great and work fine. They also have Citra in leaf form at the very bottom of the leaf page(for some reason that hop is not in alphabetical order as the others are). I have another couple of pounds on the way next week.
The only knock on them is that they do not have a built in shipping calculator on the website. So you order kinda blind as to the total cost. However you can call and place the order and they will tell you over the phone or send you an email with the info. All of my orders have been prompt and with confirmation emails with tracking info etc.

Bud, by "never order any leaf just the pellets" do you mean you never order the leaf, or reccomending people don't?

I think he means he has never ordered leaf hops from them. I have and they were great, I do prefer the pellets. they absorb less wort and are easier to work with. The difference in AA is negligible.

they will absorb a fair amount of beer, also I would get a large hop bag to use. Use one that will allow the hops to separate and have room to float. I also use a sanitized shot glass to hold the hops down so they are completely submersed.

nice. I don't have marble, mine are boulders hahahaha, just kidding. I collect shot glasses and have these little mug shot glasses they get a piece of wire attached so the glass sinks all the way down and the hop bag floats in the middle up off the trub, I usually don't secondary so I think keeping them off the bottom is good.

is leaving them to float without the sack alright?

sure, I just prefer to keep them completely immersed. I feel like they will flavor the beer better, I have no basis other than thinking the one on the very surface are not going to be contributing as much. This was a method I came up with when making the hop cousin beer.

The shipping is outrageous as they use UPS. It was like $12 to ship 2lbs to Pa. Next time I will request regular mail. The leaf hops were great though. I only use leaf as I get more complex flavors from them. I have also had bad luck with harsh flavors from pellets that need to age out.

Nate I agree completely, their shipping is outrageous. No telling how many pellet hops they could put in the larger flat rate USPS box.

I'v never tried hops direct but I have used (www.freshops.com) Very fresh hops. Down side is you need to order a min. of 2oz. of any particular hop and a total of at least 12oz. of hops. I order in bulk so it's not that much of an issue. Shipping isn't too bad cost wise. I can tell you they get back logged and it can take some time for your order to get to you. Calling and asking about your order seems to only piss the old man who answers the phone off (BEWARE!!). But on an up swing. Hops are super fresh and the variety is great.

@BB - I received 7# in a large flat rate box to PA. It was something like $16 to ship.
Well worth $86. I bartered with a bud who bought the foodsaver for me in exchange for hops. Price per ounce with the hops, foodsaver, shipping, a roll of bags and consumables was around $1.03/oz for this round. The price will now go down for every #.

I'm a whole hop user.
Very reasonable prices from HopsDirect, quick turnaround, and never a problem. Even with the shipping costs (I buy 3-4 # at a time) I still come out much cheaper than the LHBS. LHBS wants $3.00 an oz. ($48 a lb) HopsDirect is 13 a pound. Not a tough choice for me. tack on shipping (~4 a pound) it is still way cheaper.
And they always include about 3 oz more per pound. I try to trade that off for other varieties.

Mike,
You're in the same part of the country as I am. What did they charge you for shipping?

They shipped by UPS to to me and 13# were $25.50. Not cheap, but still better than a $3 an ounce. If I lump them all together, I was at $.77 per ounce with shipping.

Keith,
I chose UPS, but wish I would have chosen USPS Priority as it would have been faster. UPS doesn't ship on the weekends, and USPS does. Go with USPS.
It took 7 business days from the time the order shipped for it to get to me. Then again, it shipped on a Friday, so I lost the weekend, and then the following weekend. If I would have done USPS, I would have gotten it on Thursday instead of Monday.
GOOD LUCK! If you are getting something different than I did, and you are interested in trading a little, let me know. We are close enough to work something out.
