Back in my teens (85 or 86), I had never tried any good beers at all, and my friends convinced me to have a "Hefeweizen" which I had never heard of. It had a wierdish name, and it came in a short stubby green bottle. By the way, I thought it was awful, and I thought that was a "Hefe" for at least 15 years, until I started brewing.
Now of course, I've had, and made, many great hefeweizens.
I remember that one tasting very strong, skunky and odd. I'm sure it must have been bad in hindsight.
Anyone remember what that green stubby was?
Steve

Yeah, the 8-packs of Little Kings' were a high school staple, but it was a cream ale (7 or 8 ounce bottles?) . . . certainly not a hefe

Sure it wasn't a Heineken instead of a hefeweizen?

Yah,
I'm sure it wasn't Heineken.
I'm not certain if "Stubby" is the right name, it wasn't a smaller volume like a pony , it was a 12 oz, but shorter and stouter than a heine bottle...

hmmmmmm . . .
not Special Export? (again, not a hefe)
Carlsberg Elephant beer was in a green bottle and skunky, but also not a hefe . . . not St. Pauly Girl?
you may have stumped the panel here . . . maybe your friends lied to you about the Hefeweizen part?

I am positive that is was a hefe, because it influenced my opinion of them for decades!
I never forgot the name of it. All I drank at the time was AMPAP.
(any mass produced american pilsner)
So that was my first experience with any "good" beers.

Lets be honest here. Many of us can't remember the names of the beers we drank in our high school and college years. For one thing, we didn't care what it was, as long as we could get our hands on some beer.
Can you imagine standing around outside a convenience store and giving some, barely over 21 year old, a $20 bill and asking him to pick you up a 12 pack of hefeweizen or a nice IPA?
You'd have been happy with Old Milwaukee.

Didn't Doug and Elron McKenzie drink Blatz?
And I can take us to a spot right now in Michigan that used to serve Blatz for 25cents in mason jars. Probably still does.

"Shawn, you're too young to remember Blatz."
That was always my Dad's favorite beer.
He and his buddy used to sit outside every morning and drink good ole Blatz out of the Stubby's.
Stroh's was my first drink of beer that my Dad shared with me.
But Blatz was the other.

I think my first shared brew was moosehead.
I remember Strohs have grenade tops even in the late 80s. We got 10-12 cases when my parents went to Cancun. a few of us just hung out and got lit all week. I remember the cases were only $4 each. I also remember finding pull tab chains everywhere when i was trying to hide the evidence.
Is this morphing to favorite crappy beer thread? When I first moved to Illinois from Michigan, I thought I had won of the lotto. Red White & Blue beer for $3-4 per case, no deposit. Hell even the King was only $8.99 I was "the beer guy" for tailgates and trips back up north to Michigan.

Hi Guys!
I am officially an idiot.
I just figured out what the beer was, and my face is red.
I went on the Brewery tour yesterday at Sam Adams and found the name of that beer which was originally brewed THERE.
The defunct brewery name was on the old smokestack.
Anyone care to guess at my expense, with that clue?
'nother clue: it wasn't even a Hefeweizen, but sounds like that....

It was "Haffenreffer".
Gotta admit: it does sound a lot like hefeweizen, right?
...of course I was young, dumb, and likely very drunk !!
Apparently, at that time it was brewed/owned by Pabst.
It really was gawd-awful in my recollection.
But I was put off of "Hefeweizen", and many other "craft" brew styles for a decade and half because of it.
Time NOT well wasted. BUT I'm making up for it now!
I assume Jim Coch of Sam Adams never drank one, or he wouldn't have brewed there...
Thanks for all your guesses. ...here's to Chris Farley. Clink

Holy balls, kid - never heard of it. A little Googling tells me it was brewed by Falstaff (also short brown bottles, remember?) . . . interesting reading, and there's even a reference to Haffenreffer and Boston Beer Co. merging in 1956 . . .

I noticed that they don't ship any of those beers to the west coast. "I think they got some sort o' problem with us west coasters"
