So i've been brewing with wheat, and getting exelent results, but ive been getting stuck runoff out of my mashtun. I usually end up using a colender or strainer and let it drain, and then rinse the grains. i thought it was the wheat causing this, but this is happening with all my batches now.
I built My own mash tun out of a 19 qt pot, a tap, copper pipe and a vegatable steamer turned upside down as a false bottom. Do you think its a matter of equpment, or should i use rice hulls or six row or somthing in my batches?

Toss in a pound of rice hulls and you should be good.

In with the rest of the grain and mash it, or throw it in at the end of the mash?

what is the percentage of wheat? if it is less than 50%, I say you should look at fixing the system if you brew many wheat beers. But if rice hulls fix it, that a cheap and easy fix. My only worry is that you will need a lot of rice hulls if you use a lot of wheat or rye with your present system but fixing the system with say a steel braid would allow you to brew with more adjuncts without the addition of rice hulls.
If your system is limited in terms of what it can hold rice hulls could limit how strong of a beer you can make, too. I'm not bagging on rice hulls, so don't everyone jump on me for this, but they can be a quick fix for a problem while not addressing the problem.

I'm agreeing with dkubarek. Your vegetable steamer system may need to be modified. Have you considered using a braided, s.s. hose instead. If you are not doing a step mash, a braided hose is very effective and easy to make.

+2.....I think it's mainly a system issue. In 350 batches, I've never had a stuck runoff.
mbird, what's the difference doing a step mash with a braid?
