Replacing your vinyl hoses, canes and small dispensable brew-wares periodically will keep your brewery nice and healthy.
I've changed all mine today...

check it..

I've just begun to notice that my racking canes were starting to look a bit worse for wear. Good suggestion and thanks for the reminder!

yup, just the other day noticed that my bottle filler was starting to accumulate some residue in and around the spring. figured it might be time to get a new, clean one and avoid any nasty surprises.

I was about to replace a bunch of stuff, but thought I'd try cleaning it with PBW first. In spite of the fact that I still think Oxiclean works great, PBW took off stuff that Oxi couldn't after multiple Oxi soakings. I've got a lot less stuff that I think needs top be replaced now.

i can't find the thread where i just asked this: what is pbw?

anyone else have such a horrible memory that you'll ask a question on a thread and really want the answer, but can't remember what thread it was on?

wouldn't that be cool if tastybrew had a space on each of our personal profiles where we could see what our own posts were?

PBW=Powdered Brewery Wash from Five Star Chemical, the same people who make StarSan.

Why not use bleach and rinse it all to death?

First, PBW is a cleaner, not a sanitizer. Second, once you rinse, you're not sanitized any more. Third, bleach is nasty stuff to work with. And if you don't rinse it thoroughly enough, you'll end up with a chlorophenolic beer. I don't think you'll find many experienced brewers using bleach.

A duh moment here...did you mean use bleach to clean, instead of sanitize????

Yeah, I was just referring to cleaning, residues and such.

Naw...i don't use bleach as a sanitizer.

Arin, in that other thread, you also asked about BLC and TSP... the thread was:
Keg gas and beer lines
http://www.tastybrew.com/forum/thread/106847

blc = Beer Line Cleaner - Cleaner
pbw = Powdered Brewery Wash - Cleaner as DC pointed out.
tsp = Trisodium Phosphate Soap stuff that's bee around for years... I think Granny used to make her own with Jethro and Ellie May..... just don't tell Ms Jane Hathaway... - Again another cleaner

All available at my LHBS.... yeah he sells TSP in small containers... includes some in the starter kit...

j,

What do you use TSP for? I've used it for other applications but never for brewing...

It came as a cleaner with my initial brewing intor kit... I never used it..... I finally used it in my laundry just like moom did when I was growing up.

I use OxyClean/PBW instead... PBW has been in my aresenal for the last 1 year....

What good is B-Brite and C-Brite? I have several packs of that crap sitting around since I bought my brew gear kit. I use Iodophor for all no rinse situations (3 ml per gallon H2O), and bleach/water for all heavy duty cleaning (except on any stainless of course). Also, kegging helps reduce infections.

Thanks for re-answering that one again j, I had no idea where that questions was. I just found the brewing network and have something useful to do while driving...listening to the cleaning show and sanitizer show.
