Subject: Dilemma: what to brew Author: Paul |

So I just got my chest freezer so I can start to make lagers, and want to use it ASAP. But it seems like most lagers tend towards malt in the malt-hops balance, and I'm due to something hoppy after a string of malty ales. My IPA selection is running low. Is there such a thing as a good IPL-India Pale Lager? Does anyone have an all-grain lager recipe that is particularly good?
Thanks!
Thanks!

Do a Brooklyn Lager Clone.... or just make something up. Do a hoppy pale lager. Screw the BJCP--make an IPL. Post the recipe!

I agree with Decanthas, just brew what you want to drink and not worry about style. Do your favorite IPA and use a lager yeast.

I'm not a slave to style and have made up several recipes...most of them worked. But I just want my first lager to taste like a lager. Will the hops mask the lager characteristics? If so, I might as well do an ale and be drinking it sooner. Anyone have any experience with this?
I'll have to check out a Brooklyn Lager.

I am about 2-3 weeks away from kegging my first lager, which was an IPL. I just took one of my favorite IPA recipes and upped the late hop additions (since it would be sitting longer, lagering). When I tasted it at racking it was awesome, although I wasn't getting the aroma I wanted, so I will be keg hopping it.

Have you ever tried a German syle pils, like maybe Victory's Prima Pils? Pretty much a 1:1 BU:GU ratio....definitely on the hoppy side! There's a recipe for it in this month's Zymurgy.

Or, to play off of Denny's idea, an Imperial Pilsner could be good.

If you use a lager yeast and keep your temperature down to lager temps, then it will taste like a lager.
Because it will be a lager.
Because it will be a lager.
