So Vinnie put Pliney recipe out in the latest Zymurgy and it varies quite a bit from the version I heard him give on TBN and that he handed out at the AHA a few years back.

Did he change it? Did I screw it up a couple of years ago?

Thanks Fred.

I don't recall ever seeing "CTZ" in a recipe, looks like CTZ stands for Columbus, Tomahawk, Zeus, from a quick search. Interesting. Anyone use these before?

All except Tomahawk(some believe they're all the same).

I asked Ralph Olsen of Hop Union about Columbus, Tomahawk, and Zeus hops at NHC and he confirmed that DNA testing shows them to be identical. I have used a lot of Columbus in the past and have used a lot of Zeus in the last few months, and they seem identical to me, too.

What a kick ass beer, just tried it days ago mmmmmm

I've been using zeus and columbus as the same (love that hop). Are they grown in different places so different names?

They're actually grown very close together, but IIRC, the name Columbus is trademarked.

I see, I wonder if my Zeus will be like the real thing growing in AZ.

Ralph also talked a lot about how weather conditions influence hop production. One thing he mentioned about growing hops in warmer climates is that hops need the cold winters in order to go dormant, which allows them to have a higher yield and better quality. He said they will grow below the 35th parallel, but they won't be as productive or good quality.

I like Pliney, but I enjoy Russian River's Blind Pig even more. Would love to get a recipe for that one. I have not done much research on Blind Pig, but that is a fresh tasting, hoppy beer.

If I'm not mistaken, the original Blind Pig had oak. The current version does not. (I love the current version btw.)

I've never had the original though I've sampled homebrewed clones that were all decent.
