So are any of you going to try their low hop recipes?
I'm tempted to do one of their Scottish low hop recipes where the ABV ends up at ~2.5%. I figure my Coors lite BIL might enjoy...
They have a Toki's Brutal Pale Ale where your to use a french press (coffee) and process wort and hops to make a sort of concentrated hop soup. Used to rack primary onto this soup going to secondary. I'm tempted to play with my french press, but not overly impressed with the recipe in general.

it seems like every issue of BYO this year has been dedicated to the hop shortage. to me, it's a pain to pay more, and i wish there were more variety, but it hasn't dramatically affected the kinds of beers i brew.
among all their recommendations, i'm surprised they didn't suggest bittering with last batch's dry hops. anyone ever try that?

Mike brown once told me that he had been reusing hops from previous batches...he said he just rinsed them and stored them and then reused them along with other additions in the next batch...not sure I would try this or not...sounds like a pita

I don't plan to brew any more low hopped batches than I usually do...it's a hobby and I'll brew what I like or not brew at all.

I'm glad I'm a malthead. I brewed Denny's 'Milo's Alt' Sun. 'for last and after wieghing up all the hops(3.5% Spalt) it scrared me to death looking at all those hops. I have never put that much hops in one batch in all my years of brewing, but that's what th' man said. Who knows, might change my life.

IMO BYO is looking for anything they can write about. It's kind of gotten boring lately and I'm not sure if I'll renew next time around.

FWIW, BYO and Zymurgy are always looking for authors. If anyone has a topic they'd like to write about, contact either mag and you can earn some extra $$ for brewing.

i'm with you. i'm not quite at the point of canceling, but they need to step it up. i'd love to see a more scientific approach to recipe formulation (like Cook's Illustrated), which not only results in better recipes, but illuminates a lot of things along the way. but i know that might not appeal to the bulk of readership, and of course it would be more costly.
i've never taken zymurgy because of the price. how do you all feel it compares?

Getting Zymurgy is not just about the mag...you're actually purchasing an AHA membership and the mag is one of the things you get with it.

i'm not playing dumb, but what do i do with the membership (if i don't enter competitions)?
how's the mag itself?

I subsrcibed to Zymurgy once, 1987, it helped me alot but just couldn't afford to keep it.The AHA membership didn't nor wouldn't have done anything for me. I live to far from everywhere!

The mag is generally great. With your membership in the AHA, you get the mag as well a membership in the pub discount program. That may or may not be a big deal to you. You also support the legislative efforts of the AHA to legalize shipping of homebrew, legalization of homebrewing in states where it currently isn't legal, and various legislative efforts to keep all beer available and reasonably priced.

The pub discount doesn't apply to me because I'm a craft beer lover in a malt liquor city.
I did buy the AHA membership though to support my favorite hobby and hopefully go to an AHA rally in the future. Football games interfere with this years.

Reasonably priced=less expensive than they could be otherwise due to taxes

I suspect that the disenchantment noted is the same situation one gets when rewatching a movie they liked when they were less experienced but now no longer find entertaining...I also have outgrown BYO...this group as well as rec.crafts.brewing, are up to date and cover our hobby from novice to masterbrewer,
