Went over to the Rogue brewery yesterday for an advance sample of "Gone Awry", their version of my rye IPA recipe. John stayed pretty faihtful to the original recipe, only making a few subs. For instance, he has some carawheat around, so he used thet instead of both the crystal and wheat malts in the original recipe. He aLso subbed carafoam for the carapils, and I think I'm gonna start doing that alos. For bittering, instead of Columbus, he used a new hop from Hop Union called "Centennial Type"...it's 70% Cascade, 30% Columbus. He kept the Mt. Hood for FWH and used Horizon for the flavor addition. He used Amarillo for the finishing hop, and quite a bit of it since the tanks he's conditioning in apparently doesn't allow dry hopping. The beer tased VERY similar to the one I make, with a couple noticable differences. It has a bit less body and malt backbone than mine, which I attribute to a lower % of crystal and a more attenuative yeast (Pacman). His OG was 17.5P, a touch lower than mine, and it fermented out further than mine usually does. All in all, though, I was really pleased with how true to my beer he remained, and impressed by how everybody at the brewery was raving about it! I'm shipping over an empty corny today for him to fill up. If any of you out there are going to OBF, be sure to stop by Rogue's booth and have a taste! It will also be available in bottle after OBF as the August offering in their 15th Anniversary series.

Wow, Congrats Denny!
Is your picture going to be on the bottle? Or would that cause alot of bottle breakage, and low sales
Can't wait to try it.

Actually, the bottle haven't been designed yet, so John's wife Stacy suggested putting my pic on the bottles...John and I looked at each other and said "NAW!!!".

Did they have any ideas on what it (the bottle design) might be??

Also, have you decided whether or not you're going to the OBF?

Wow, that's really cool. You gonna have the corny at the party? So "Gone Awry" is going to be a regular beer?

Congrat's on the beer! You should push to get your picture on the bottle. You could be famous like Chris and get a nick name for your beer like "Bald Guy Brown". Did John tell you the story about the cenntenial type hop, it was created because this year's supply of cenntenial has ran out.

Whoa. They're bottling it, too? Most of the time these situations just get a small kegging distribution. What kind of bottle distribution is planned and will it be a limited offering? Either way, Congrats!

On a similar note, I planned all the recipes for the rest of 2004 (about 5 more beers) and replicated your RyePA. Even after adjusting for batch size and efficiency, I'm amazed how exact it came out in terms of OG/Color/IBUs. I can't wait to brew it up this fall. I have never followed anyone's brew recipe ever, so take it as my greatest compliment that I'm being 100% faithful to yours- It's with much respect that I do so.

=ok, brain bending time= (I know- I have way too much time on my hands at work)

Centennial Type. Is it 30% centennial hops and 70% cascade blend, or is it a single hybrid with those parents? Since it was called a "new hop" I have to assume it's a hybrid. How could they forsee a shortage of a hop, then create and produce a new strain to cover for the shortage? Yes, I'm one of those bastards that asks these type of questions- my parents let me watch NOVA when I was very little.

Hop Union ran out of Centennial, so they are substituting a mixture of Cascade and Columbus.

AFAIK, I'm not gonna be on the bottles....

Rob, I won't have the keg for this weekend...I just shipped over an empty keg via UPS yesterday and I'm gonna go over in a couple weeks to pick it up. John just wanted me to get one over there to make sure I got some!

WOW! I really did miss out! I haven't been down to taste July's new beer, but its always easier to spend the money on Monday's, when the anniversary beers go for less than $2/pint.

All of the anniversary beers get bottled in 22ozer's, though I don't know how widely they get distributed. The bottles and the serving glasses for each brew get the same silk screen. Not all glasses have been the standard pint glass either. "Glen" was a mason jar glass with a handle, the chipotle beer had a margarita style serving glass... Denny, you're on fire man! Send them some art work!!!

Yah Denny, I suspected you might not know...we'll make sure that you get as many as you need! As you said, they won't release until the 15th of August, but if you make it over before then to pick up the cornie, and John doesn't already make a pact to send you some glasses, lemme know...I'll deliver them! I'll pick up 22's and/or a case order too, so lemme know if you want to have a bottle party.

...in exchange for beer samples, of course. I'll bring some hb over for evaluation too.

I agree. That's totally cool that Rogue's making your beer Denny! I doubt that it will, but I hope their distribution makes it up here in Washington. Your RyePA is next up on my brewing list...can't wait to taste what all the hype is about.

Keith,
I'm not sure where in Washington you're located, but there is one of Rogues places in Issaquah. It's called the Issaquah Brewery. I was there this weekend and they carry the anniversary beers. This time it was the Black Soba, Pretty tasty stuff I might add. If you're anywhere close, you should make a trip over and have a taste.

Nate - I'm actually about an hour and a half away from Issaquah (I live in Oak Harbor). Next time I'm down in Seattle, I'll have to make the trip. I'm a big fan of Rogue beers.

Keith,
August 15th would be a good day to go. That will be the day they unveil the Gone Awry. It will be at 15:15 hours. You know, the whole 15 thing being the 15th anniv. and all that cutesy crap.

Welcome roguemail readers. And congrats again to Denny Conn!

Just got my roguemail, and it talks about Gone Awry and links to Tastybrew.com:

GONE AWRY
=========
John Maier brewed yet another unique beer for the Oregon Brewers Festival, a Rye Pale Ale dubbed Gone Awry IPA. Brewed with Rye, 2 row Pale, Carawheat and Carafoam Malts; Centennial-type (a new Hop Union hop variety: 70% Cascade and 30% Columbus), Mt Hood, Horizon and Amarillo hops; Gone Awry measures in at 17 degrees Plato, 72 IBU, 7.5 percent ABV, and 82 percent Apparent Attenuation. Its pale color belies the in-your-face bracing hoppiness and long lasting finish of our 15th Oregon Brewers' Festival Beer. A tongue-tingling experience. Kudos also go to Denny Cohn, the homebrewer who's Rye IPA recipe impressed and influenced John into commercially brewing a batch, albeit with some Rogue adjustments.

Now you can flash your American Express and not worry about getting mobbed at a coastal pub!
As long as the bottles and glasses don't read "Cohn Awry" it's all good.

Does this beer really exist? I was out camping at Beverly State Beach this weekend and made a run down to Rogue to grab some Gone Awry in bottles or get a growler full if it was only on tap. There wasn't any to be found. Dang Denny, what do I have to do to get a taste of this beer?

The Gone Awry won't be available until Aug 15th, for the anniversary thing. The Oregon Brew Fest had it there, but that was a special thing for the fest.
