Ya i know it is totally against the concept of brewing good beer, but a friend of mine swears by mexican beer ala corona, modelo especial. He is always asking me why I cant brew a "good" beer like that. I want to show the bum that I can brew any kind of beer. I
know whitelabs makes a mexican lager yeast. but Im having a hard time finding a recipe. Im doing all grain with a batch sparging setup like denny's.
anyone know a good clone recipe?

Pils malt and about 10-15% percent rice or corn to a gravity of about 1.045-50. Hop to about 25 IBU with noble hops. Little to no flavor or aroma hops.

just look for a light lager recipe, and then leave it exposed out in the sun for an hour after you bottle it.

I agree with Denny's fomulation. I made a batch last year for a friend who swears by coors lite and he loved it. All "americanized" light lagers are the same. I think my recipe was...
5# 2 row
2# rice (or flaked maize for corona)
1/2 oz cascade @ 60

DC are you sure the IBU's are even that high? I drink ME fairly regularly and it isn't much in the way of hops to me. Both Bohemia & Modelo Especial are the shining stars of Mexican exports AFAIC. The ME in the can is the one to get and it is really good. Avoid the bottles since they are clear.
Edit-
Negro Modelo is a Vienna style black ale and a far cry from Modelo Especial. I'll add it to the list of shining stars. I don't think a person who prefers Corona etc would care for it at first, much in the way they wouldn't like a stout.

It may be black (actually, more like dark brown), but it's a lager. The BJCP lists it as an example of Vienna lager.

I've never had a Negro Modelo, however a Negra Modelo is an amber colored Vienna Lager.

OK I got an O mixed with an A! We say it pretty fast down here and I got mixed up...
This is what we are talking about:
http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/75/667
Hard to see from this picture but on the lower left part of the label it says 'dark ale' The description of 'Vienna Lager' from Beer Advocate is not accurate.
I wish I had a bottle in front of me. Everytime I go to the store I reach right past it... And believe me it is quite dark.

I get this beer every time I go to Qdoba. Last time I checked it was a Vienna lager, and looked pretty amber to me.
edit: sometimes they label them as "Ales" for some reason, even though they are not. For example, New Belgians 1554 is a "Black Ale", but its actually a lager. They guy there told me they had to do this for distribution in TX.

Negro Modelo is a Vienna lager and its amber
Modelo especial is real bad stuff. Don't waste your time making crap for your friend who like crappy beer. Its cheaper to buy.

Corona Clone
10lbs stale 6 row barley
5lbs canned corn
3 lbs used kitty litter
1oz stale Galena hops 90 min
dough in at 145 20 min
155 1hr
170 5 min
boil 90 min
for fermentation add 2 more tsp of the used kitty litter
Let sit in the sun for the entire month of July then bottle. Note: for added authenticity, you may want to invite all your friends to come over and urinate in the bottling bucket after priming.

Nate Gates, that's the most I've ever laughed at a post on this site and probably the hardest I've laughed in the past year. "entire month of July" put me over the edge, thank you.

Allright. My tail is tucked between my legs. Bought a sixxer on the way home. Not "black as sin" but really more of a light brown ale or even an amber. Damn, I remember it being more like 1554 but WTF I was wrong. Sez Dark ale. Not sure what that means now. I'll go out on a limb and say I consider it an ale. Has an interesting subtle taste. Got a little corn to it...?
Nate- I think you are right on with the recipe for Corona. Except you need to toss a really pissed off skunk over the boil for the last 1 minute addition.
As far as the Especial- Hey, I'll choose it over BMC any day... which I cannot say for Corona. Tru dat for the price tho- I got a sixxer of cans for $5.99.

It's labelled as an ale, but that's for legal reasons in certain states. It's a lager....

Salvator and Ofest/mar (Paulaner) to name a few has 'ale' on them in Ark. I think if its over
5% abv 'abc' says to put somethin' else on it, somethin' like that anyway. Malt liq...ect.

Grolsch is labeled as "Premium Lager" on the case but the label on the bottle randomly says "Ale" on the side of it...

I'm going to investigate this if I can get up the gumption to wade through all of the info. My limited experience in Texas is that the label "malt liquor" applies to higher ABV brews. Maybe this is a Federal thing since it is an import?

This clears it up certainly... I was wondering about all those Belgians, Imperial Pilsners etc I've been drinking LOL
