Paying to ship to Alaska and then paying to ship to the finals just isn't in my game plan. It'll be interesting to see what the entry count is going to be this year versus past years. Nothing against the guys in Alaska as they are great guys from my limited dealings with them (BTW, they make great beers). It shoul dbe a good year to get your beers to the finals from the PNW.

Alaska? I'm missing something here I think.
It does seem a little odd that with all the knowledge on this site that there isn't more people
getting into this. My first comp was the last one we did on this site. This is #2.
Seems like some of the comments are not in the ball park but that's how a guy can learn something.
I talked to a BJCP guy on this site and he told me "most homebrewers think their beer is better than it really is"..........good words, Thanks you.
why not find out and learn from it?
I trust these judges in this comp and I can't wait to read the findings and drink one of the beers I bottled up at the same time as the ones I sent in. I will learn from that.

'I talked to a BJCP guy on this site and he told me "most homebrewers think their beer is better than it really is"..........'
I guess that's why I'm probably not entering any more comps. Like Steve, I entered a couple, got interesting feedback, and that's enough for me. I basically brew for myself, anyway, so I'll choose to live in the illusion that my beer is good. By all means, everyone who is interested in having their beers evaluated and critiqued should enter.
Greg & Jim: interested in a triple swap? I'd gladly send along some Brew Moon and/or Fat Kid for a chance to try some Greg Grog . . .

CLB, the problem with us West Coasters is that the nearest drop off point is Alaska. Last year, you could drop off in Portland.
I entered 2 bottles to the 'early bird' shipping location in WA, which cost a reasonable $15. But the IPA that I brewed specifically for the comp wasn't done yet. This bums me out. This will be my 2nd comp too, and for once I planned ahead for it, but now I don't think I'll enter the IPA as the shipping is too rich for my blood.

I was hoping to send something, but I just brewed for the first time in 5 months... So I have nothing ready. I'll have to plan it better next year.

I kind of just realized the AHA NC is just down the road from me. But I might try entering in a smaller, more local convention I was told about first. Really, I think I just want to take the BJCP class and learn to judge it myself. I don't care too much about ribbons. I can't drink those.

Ian, Ya I see that the judging is in Alaska. That is about the dumbest thing I have ever heard of. Making a majority population of people ship to a small population area just seems wrong on every level. I mean you can't ship via the USPS and that is the only shipping a guy could afford. Looks like any one not in the "early bird" group is just out of luck. It will be interesting to see the numbers for the Northwest region.

Good luck to you also Joe and everyone else.
Packed and shipped the 5 beers today. Now I guess we leave it in the hands of the "Beer Godz".
