Subject: Nitro Setup, How do I?

I recently had a Guiness (best of what was available) and it was not served with nitrogen and I really saw the difference. This has pushed me over the edge to get a nitro setup.

What do I need equipment wise?
Procedures?
Where can I get beergas north of Detroit?

Thanks

Fred

You're gonna need a stout tap(about $100), 75/25 mixed beer gas tank, and also a nitro regulator. I just set the pressure to 30 maybe 35psi - wait several days to carb - and then party time.

Stouts on nitro are just awesome!

Once you get setup, after you finish your keg(s) make sure you flush the tap really really well...more so than with your other taps. There is an internal O-ring inside the tap that can stick and get caught. Happened to me, pulled the tap and it didn't stop pouring...

Hey Fred, you can put some EPA's on nitro too! Just drank a couple Boddington's that were on nitro at our local Irish pub - really enjoyed it.

Are you going to put your imperial RIS on nitro?

The setup described above, minus the nitro regulator. If you have a mixed tank, you normal CO2 reg. will work.

For the procedure you either need to bubble the alley gas through the beer. Some of the companies sell a keg lid with a carb stone attached to it. if you don't want to spend the money on that type of setup, you shake the hell of of the beer and force the gas into solution. Nitrogen is not very soluble in beer so you force it into solution. If you just pressurize your beer with the gas, only the C02 portion will dissolve and you can tell if that has happened if you beer foams out of the glass or it does not have the normal cascading effect that guiness has. Also, you have to periodically shake your gas tank, the gases will seperate over time.

For now I'm just looking at putting some of my "starters" on nitro, so fairly low gravity stuff, but a 15%+ beer on nitro, I'll have to try that sometime.

This still leaves the question of where can I get beergas from in my area?

I have a stout faucet already, which regulator / gass bottle I use will depend on what I can get filled where I get it filled.

I know more beer has a setup for $70 - pretty expensive IMO. I just use a .5 micron stone with some 1/4" ID tubing (I think that's the size I used, have to check) attached to the gas in poppet. Just insert the tubing to gas in stub inside the keg. I find this gives a good nitro carbonation in about 2-3 hours.

Jeff- is it a 1/4"ID tube you use for the gas-in stub? And do you just let the stone sit on the bottome of the keg? How does the .5 micron work for ya? Is it better than 2 micron?

I am so tempted to do this. I got a faucet(CO2) for my beer and absolutely love it and told myself I will never make a stout until I have nitro.

If you act fast, MoreBeer is selling these keg lids with CO2 stones at half off. They say (as of *right now*) they only have 3 left at the $35 price tho. http://morebeer.com/view_product/18212 ($35.00 w/coupon code BEERDEAL).

This is intriguing. If you push Nitro in with a cap like that, do you serve with your regular CO2 set up? And if so, you eventually would need to re-add nitro to get more of the correct gas mixture true? Or am I not seeing the whole picture clearly....

I will check tonight when I get home on the size. One end of the tubing has the .5 micron stone in it and yes, it sits close to the bottom of the keg. The other end of the tubing is attached to the poppet.

Over the years, it has worked fine for me. Bob G. taught me this trick.
