No I'm not talking about a new girlfriend... Heh. Anyhoo- at the end of a confusing and stressful brew session and in a fit of pique I scooped out about a 1/4-1/3 cup of yeast from a fermenter of Abbey ale. I lightly swirled it onto the surface of my cooled wort. I was worried about the viability but it seemed to incorporate into the wort on its own over about a hours time. It was foaming within six hours of pitching and is now fermenting quite vigorously. This was the fastest take-off I've ever seen- including pitching onto a huge fresh yeast-cake. Yeast is WLP530. I'm impressed.
Anyone else use this method regularly?

Dood, you should have seen the fermentation activity when I pitched the starter I made with US-05. Bubbles within a half hour, full bore in two or three hours. It scared me, I slept in the next room snuggled up with a blow off tube.

Sometimes they go like mad and sometimes they sit around for a little longer than we would like,
but they almost always go. (I have not had one that didn't go).

I tried using a fresh yeast cake for the first time with my Dunkelweizen and it took off in 75 minutes, love it.

Radtek, how did you do this scooping thing? I mean was it just that simple - say, just reach in with a sanitised glass measuring cup and scoop up a bunch of the sticky stuff and pour it in there. I ask 'cause I'm planning on tryin' this very thing.

Hair of the dogg. Hair of the dogg. Salvation is OK, but I usually pass it up. Not really to my taste as far as a Golden Strong goes.
